Basic Photo Editing

There are many applications available for editing photos. PhotoShop is a well-known app that professional photographers use on a daily basis, but it's not necessary for a beginner to use this application. In fact, there are so many choices in photo editing software today, many of which do more than basic editing, yet are well-suited to the novice. We will share a few here today.


iPhoto

Why use iPhoto to edit photos?

  • It is the default photo app on your laptop, so it's at your fingertips already.

  • Adjust exposure, brightness, and contrast.
  • Crop to frame your subject.

iPhoto is a pretty intuitive app for editing photos. Open a photo and click the Edit tool at bottom of screen. You will see these choices:

Picnik is a pretty intuitive program to learn. It is organized with tabs.

  • Home- upload photos here.
  • Library - where the photos you upload are stored if you have registered for a free account (not necessary to regisiter to use the app though)
  • Edit - for basic editing such as auto-fix, rotate, crop, resize, exposure, colors, sharpen & Red ey
  • Create - where you do the fun stuff such as add effects, text, stickers, touch-up, frames, advanced, seasonal
  • Save & Share - allows you to save to your computer and/or share with Flickr, Facebook, Picasa Web Albums,Twitter, etc.

Picasa & Picasa Web Albums

Important note: Before you can work with Picasa and Picasa Albums, you must have 2 things:
  1. You must have a google account (your Collegiate Cougle account is NOT considered a "google account."
  2. You must download the application, Picasa, from Google. Download Picasa for the mac here.
